Private Lesson Instruction

General Information
Individual lessons are available for the study of most orchestral instruments and voice. Registration is for the entire school year, since at least a year is required for significant advancement. Experience has shown that progress with the technical aspects of any instrument or voice is accelerated by a broader understanding of music in general. Jefferson @ OSU has no additional fee for concurrent enrollment in a Musicianship Class and students are strongly urged to participate in their assigned class.

The tuition for private lessons is determined by a combination of the length of the weekly lesson and the credentials/ experience of the instructor. The length of the weekly lesson is an indication of the minimum daily practice expected. The tuition includes performance on recitals, masterclasses, and workshops with an accompanist.

lnstructor Descriptions:
Instructors are available with varied credentials and experience ranging from the apprentice undergraduate (Level 1) who is just beginning to teach to the Master Teacher (Level IV) who often has vast experience and a national reputation.

Each new instructor added to our staff is carefully screened and selected on the basis of qualifications and recommendations. In accordance with Ohio law, all Jefferson @ OSU instructors have had the required background check.

Below is a brief description of the instructors at each level:

Apprentice Instructors-Level I are a limited number of OSU School of Music majors who have satisfactorily completed pedagogy classes and teach under the guidance and supervision of the Artist Faculty of the OSU School of Music. Apprentice Instructors (Level I), are never assigned to adult or advanced students.

Certified Instructors-Level II have a music degree in their teaching area plus additional certified teaching experience. They use guidelines established for their particular instrument by the Artist Faculty of The OSU School of Music.

Advanced Instructors-Level III have at least one advanced music degree in addition to substantial teaching credentials and experience. They establish their own guidelines and teaching methods.

Master Teachers- Level IV may be Artist Faculty of the OSU School of Music or Master Teachers from the community. An interview and audition are required of new students.

Evaluations

For classes and group lessons, instructors will only provide a written evaluation for those students who have arranged in advance to receive credit from their school for the class. For private lessons, the student’s instructor will provide a written evaluation of progress at the end of the spring quarter, together with suggestions for summer study.

Each quarter a private lesson or performance will include a performance evaluation when another instructor and/or Artist Faculty of the OSU School of Music observes. This is an invaluable means for both student and instructor to receive an assessment of their achievement, while providing an incentive to make substantial progress. Classes and group lessons often have the assistance of student teachers and are observed by OSU Artist Faculty and music education students.
